Man accused of leading police on high-speed chase after stolen car

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – Police have arrested a man after they say he got into a high-speed chase with officers while in a stolen car.

Craighead County District Judge Tommy Fowler on Monday, Oct. 28, found probable cause to charge Dylan Ruban Cardenas, 24, of Jonesboro, with theft by receiving $25,000 or more, fleeing, reckless driving and possession of a Schedule VI substance under 4 ounces.

According to the affidavit, at approximately 9:10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, a Jonesboro police officer went to the 900 block of Mace Lane for a stolen 2023 gray Toyota Corolla.

At approximately 3:36 a.m. on October 28, patrol officers received a report that a vehicle was located in the northern part of the city. They later found him near the intersection of Belt and Melrose streets.

The affidavit said officers attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle sped off, leading to a chase that ended up in Paragould.

“During this pursuit, the stolen vehicle reached speeds in excess of 100 mph, ran several stop signs and crossed the center line several times,” police said.

The chase returned to Jonesboro, where officers set up spike strips near the intersection of Clinton School Road and Johnson Avenue. This caused two of the car’s tires to go flat.

The vehicle eventually stopped near the intersection of North Culberhouse and Blankenship. The driver, Cardenas, was arrested. Officers were able to find approximately 1.3 grams of marijuana in Cardenas’ sock.

The affidavit states Cardenas is on probation and has a history of theft and escape.

Cardenas is being held at the Craighead County Detention Center on $100,000 cash/surety bond.

Judge Fowler set Cardenas’ arraignment date for Tuesday, December 17.
