What is the story?

Norwegian Mats Steen, the hero of the film “THE STRANGE LIFE OF IBELIN”, was born with Duchenne disease, a rare form of muscular dystrophy. He was confined to a wheelchair from an early age. When he died at age 25, his parents mourned all the life events they felt he never had the chance to experience, such as having an impact on the lives of others, having a community of friends, and falling in love. As reports began to pour in from across Northern Europe, they quickly discovered that Mats had spent his entire life and community online in the fantasy world of World of Warcraft, where he had spent around 20,000 hours over the last decade of his life. There he did everything his parents expected of him and even more.

This is a unique and emotional film that will stay in your memory long after the scene and credits have ended. The wonderful life of Ibelin truly extraordinary, both in the life story at its heart and in the mesmerizing way in which it is presented on screen. It begins with home videos that play forward, then rewind as the story takes an unexpected turn, and weave in again as Mats’ story is retold, imbuing each previously seen image with a whole new meaning. It’s a brilliant way to visualize how Mats’ loved ones must have felt when they realized that everything they thought they knew about his life was incomplete.

So how brave and generous of them to share this story. They learned that Mats’ short existence contained important messages about the values and experiences that give life meaning. In the hands of a different director, these messages could have been undermined or subverted by an appreciation of virtual life as something less than IRL. When the muscular Ibelin runs through the fields and flirts with girls, “breaking the chains” of what Mats can do in real life, everything becomes clear. Benjamin Rhee uses their dialogue archives to bring their shared past to life in a fantasy online world with new animations. Several different people explain how their digital lives with “Ibelin” have complemented and enhanced their real lives. It completes a groundbreaking, inventive and unforgettable film and life story.

  • How does a virtual experience differ from a real-life experience? Is one more or less valuable? Did the movie change your mind about that?

  • How did Mats, as Ibelin, show compassion to the WoW community? How did it affect their lives, according to the movie?

  • Why do you think people are drawn to alternate online universes like World of Warcraft (WoW)? Have you participated in an online role-playing game, and if so, what was your experience?
