Three bodies, believed to be six people who were reported missing in Jiribam district, were found near the confluence of the Jiri and Barak rivers along the Manipur-Assam border, officials said on Saturday. The remains, including that of a woman and two children, were found on Friday evening about 16 kilometers from Borobekr in Jiribam district, where the group was last seen on Monday, PTI said. Although the bodies have not yet been officially identified, authorities suspect they may belong to the missing. The remains were taken to Silchar Medical College Hospital (SMCH) in Assam and deposited in the mortuary for postmortem. Earlier, six members of a family, including three women and three children, one of whom was an infant, went missing from Borobekr in Jiribam following violence in the region. All six hail from the Meitei community and were staying at a relief camp set up at the Borobekra police station after the riots in June. The official said the process of identification is on and photographs have been collected for confirmation. Autopsies are being conducted in Assam due to inadequate conditions at Jiribam. Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh called a meeting with senior ministers on Friday evening to discuss the situation after the discovery. Tensions in the Imphal Valley escalated as news of the bodies spread, prompting authorities to declare a holiday for schools and colleges in all five districts on Saturday. – News of India
