Matthew Perry’s mum is crying because she ‘couldn’t help him’ before his death

Matthew Perry’s mother, Suzanne Morrison, became emotional as she reflected on her son’s years-long battle with addiction in front of his death last year.

Suzanne and her husband, “Dateline” correspondent Keith Morrison, sat down with “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie to discuss Perry’s life in interview published on Monday.

“I was very lucky, but there was one setback, there was one problem that I couldn’t, I couldn’t overcome,” Suzanne said as her voice broke and she began to cry.

“I couldn’t help him.”

Later in the interview, Suzanne became emotional when she mentioned Perry struggle with addiction for decades leading up to his death and his struggle to get sober.

“The one thing I have to learn (is) really hard and that is … You have to stop blaming yourself because it tears you apart,” she admitted.

Suzanne and Keith, who have been married since 1981, recalled how they got the call on October 28, 2023 about the Friends actor’s death.

“Someone called Suzanne and he just said, ‘Matthew is dead,'” Keith, 77, shared as Suzanne chimed in, saying the person on the phone said, “Matthew is dead. Your son is dead.”

The couple also reflected on Perry’s life and how he “lighted up the room” but struggled with his thoughts.

“I think he was also very lonely in his soul,” Suzanne said, while Keith added that his stepson was “an insecure, often very sad boy.”

Shortly before his death, Perry “went through a period,” which he was have more meaningful conversations with his mother

“He came up to me and said, ‘I love you so much and I’m so happy to be with you.’ … It was almost like it was a premonition or something,” Suzanne shared.

“How long has it been since we talked like this? It’s been years,” she recalled thinking.

Suzanne went on to say that she felt “what was going to happen to him was inevitable.”

Perry was 54 when he died in a jacuzzi at home in Los Angeles last year. The cause of his death was later the acute effect of ketamine has been determinedwith drowning and coronary heart disease as contributing factors.

Before his death, the “17 Again” star said he was sober and told his family that he was also sober. using ketamine –– an anesthetic used to treat depression and pain –– to help him overcome his addiction.

“We didn’t know how much he was taking,” Keith admitted, later adding that it “didn’t turn into something he couldn’t control.”

Keith said he “thought” Perry was sober, while Suzanne disagreed.

The “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Awful Thing” author’s use of ketamine it is reported that “the spiral (got) out of control” a few months before his sudden death.

Since then, five people, including two doctors and Perry’s personal assistant, were charged with conspiracy to distribute ketamine in connection with his death.
