A Chicago man has been charged with murdering a suburban detective

OAK PARK, IL — Authorities have charged a 37-year-old Chicago resident with first-degree murder. shooting death suburban police detective.

Detective Allan Reddin of the Oak Park Police Department was killed Friday morning after responding to a report of a man walking out of a bank with a gun in the suburbs west of Chicago, police said. He later died at a local hospital.

The Cook County District Attorney’s Office on Saturday charged Jerell Thomas of Chicago with murder. Thomas was also charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Oak Park authorities said Thomas began shooting when Reddin and other officers approached him.

Thomas was shot in the leg and remained hospitalized Sunday with non-life-threatening injuries.

No bond hearing has been scheduled. Thomas’ listed phone number has been disconnected. An email message seeking comment was left for him on Sunday.

Investigators described Thomas as a “habitual criminal” with prior arrests for aggravated battery on a police officer, domestic battery, battery and resisting a police officer.

Reddins, 40, was the first Oak Park police officer to be shot in the line of duty since 1938, according to Oak Park officials. He worked at the department since 2019.
