Police shot a man who was driving a stolen car – video

Body camera personnel An incident in Newark, where a police officer shot and killed a man who tried to flee in a stolen car during a traffic stop, was made public on Friday night.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 12, two Newark police officers saw a vehicle parked on Clinton Place near Hawthorne Avenue in the city, determined it had been stolen, and moved their patrol car in front of the vehicle so they could speak with the person. inside, according to a release from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, which is investigating the incident.

Officers got out of their vehicle, approached the stolen vehicle, saw a man sitting in the passenger seat and ordered him to get out, which he did, the office said. One of the police officers, Alexander Ferreira, then handcuffed the man and escorted him to his parked police car.

A few minutes later, another man came out of a nearby store, got into the stolen car through the passenger side door and got into the driver’s seat, investigators said. Ferreira and his partner left the handcuffed passenger near the patrol car and immediately returned to the other car and tried to remove the man who had just entered it.

The man ordered to stop, but he did not comply. Ferreira returned to the cruiser, put the handcuffed man in the back seat and ran back to the front driver’s side of the stolen vehicle, authorities said. Then Ferreira’s partner got into an argument with the driver, who engaged the gear and reversed, which forced the policeman to drive away from the car.

The vehicle then accelerated forward and Ferriera fired two shots from his service weapon, striking the driver, the office said.

The car collided with a patrol car and stopped for a moment, then drove forward at a high rate of speed and crossed the intersection. It crashed into a brick building and crashed into two parked unoccupied vehicles, officials said.

Ferreira and his partner treated the driver, who has not been identified, and transported him to University Hospital. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries but is expected to survive, investigators said.

No charges were announced Friday because the shooting remains under investigation by the office.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda called the release of the video “a prudent step in the investigative process that aligns with the Newark Police Department’s commitment to serving our community with the utmost transparency.”

“We are confident that Attorney General (Matthew) Platkin’s office will conduct a thorough and balanced investigation into this incident,” Miranda said. “We also thank our conscientious community members for their willingness to cooperate with the investigation.”
