Authorities in the Spanish city of Zaragoza say at least 10 people have died in a fire at a nursing home.

MADRID — At least 10 people died in a fire at a nursing home in Zaragoza, Spain, before firefighters were able to put it out, local authorities said Friday.

Authorities were alerted to the fire early Friday morning in Villa Franca de Ebro, about 30 minutes northeast of the city.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, local media reports.

Jorge Ascón, head of the regional government of Aragon, whose capital is Zaragoza, confirmed the death and said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that all government events in the region had been canceled for the day.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also expressed his shock at the fire and loss of life.

The fire comes just weeks after devastating flooding in Valencia killed more than 200 people and destroyed thousands of homes. The floods have become the worst natural disaster in recent Spanish history.
