Hyderabad ACP arrested for obstructing police at checkpoint for drunk driving

Hyderabad News: Hyderabad Police registered a case against Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Suman Kumar of Siddipet district after he allegedly obstructed the check of drunk drivers and tried to protect the drunk driver. The incident took place near the SR Nagar metro station on the night of November 12-13 and drew attention after a video surfaced on Thursday showing the confrontational behavior of the ACP.

According to police, the ACP was in plainclothes and traveling with three others when their Tata Safari was stopped at the check post, according to an IANS report. The female police officer noticed that as the car approached the checkpoint, the driver moved to the back seat, switching places with the passenger who took the driver’s seat. This prompted police to conduct breathalyzer tests on both individuals. However, both men refused to cooperate.

ASR introduced himself to traffic police inspectors and insisted that they be let through without testing. Sub-inspector G. Kanta Rao, who headed the checkpoint team, asked the ACP to comply, leading to a heated argument.

According to Kanth Rao’s complaint, the ACP pushed him and hit the hood of the car, damaging it, according to the report. After backup was called, the original driver, identified as businessman N. Jaipal Reddy of Alwala, was escorted to the Madhura Nagar police station where his blood alcohol content (BAC) was measured at 39 mg/1000 ml, above the legal limit of 30 mg.

Among the passengers were N. Srinivas and G. Venkat Rao. Constable Kaveri recorded the incident on her mobile phone, capturing the moment the driver tried to change gears as the car approached the checkpoint. The police have since registered a case against the ACP for his actions and further investigation into the incident is underway.
