Lucinda Russell hails ‘real teamwork’ as she reaches landmark 1,000 career wins at local circuit

Lucinda Russell achieved a landmark 1000th career win under both codes when Starlight justifiably strongly backed in the 2m5f below handicap hurdle Patrick Wadge on the Scottish Borders track.

The two-time Grand National-winning trainer was marking the milestone at the place where it all began back in 1993, when Gunmetal Boy took his first victory in the hunter chase.

After the easy 7-2 goal, Russell said: “It was a real team effort to get to the landmark. I would especially like to thank all the owners who have supported me since I received my professional license for the 1995-96 season, all the jockeys who have ridden for me and all the staff who have worked with me. Without their hard work and dedication, none of this would be possible.

“Central to each of the 1,000 wins, regardless of where they took place or how big the race was, is the satisfaction we share with our owners. I’ve been touched by how many people have been communicating lately. several days as this moment approached.

“Our two Grand National wins with One For Arthur in 2017 and Corach Rambler in 2023 have helped build the stable’s profile considerably, but the bread and butter meetings in England, Scotland and Wales have been the backbone of our success. .”

Wedge also won his claim by 3lb and the pair combined again for the bumper a little later with Humble Jumble.

500 for Anderson Green

Owner of top jumps Raymond Anderson Green was also a major milestone when he registered his 500th winner both on the Flat and over jumps Gold De Bois just held on at home in a 2m1f handicap chase.

The Cheltenham Festival owner had been stuck on 499 winners since May until the joint 9-4 favorite scored by a nose from the persistentFia Fuinid in just his second start for Sandy Thomson.

It comes just nine years after the two-time Scottish National Championship holder celebrated his 400th win at the same circuit, although Anderson Green was absent this time as he is currently on holiday in Antigua.
