ADOT adds traffic information for Rocky Point with help from Mexican authorities

PUERTO PENASCO, MEXICO (AZFamily) — It’s no secret that one of the hottest weekend and vacation destinations in Arizona is Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, also known in English as Rocky Point.

Due to its popularity, heavy traffic often occurs along the Ajo Sonoyta Highway (SR 85), the Lukeville Port of Entry and Mexican Federal Highway 8.

Officials in Arizona and along the southern border are now working to help you better prepare for your trip and highway conditions before you get to the beach resort town.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says it’s adding updates for the Mexican highway AZ511state traffic information system starting Thanksgiving weekend.

Sonoran officials will forward the information to ADOT, where operators will enter it into the traffic system.

“ADOT’s vision is to connect people safely and empower the economy, and this collaborative effort with our partners in Sonora helps us expand peak travel times to and from Puerto Peñasco,” said Jennifer Toth, the agency’s director.

Officials in Arizona say the pilot project is a collaboration between ADOT, the Arizona-Mexico Commission, the Arizona Tourism Authority and the Sonora Commission, which works on U.S. relations.

“This is the perfect time to expand the important tourism services that AZ511 offers, as we always welcome increased travel from Mexico this time of year,” said Lisa Urias, director of the state’s tourism office. “Visitors from Mexico love coming to Arizona to visit family and shop during the holidays, and the AZ511 helps make international travel as enjoyable and efficient as possible.”
