The military has arrested a person suspected of killing a sergeant at Fort Leonard Wood

Military law enforcement agencies on Thursday detained a person interested in the suspected murder of a private soldier in Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.

Sgt. Sarah Roque, 23, missed Monday morning’s muster, prompting officials to alert the public to help find her. The notice said that neither her management nor her family could contact her. Officials said her body was found in a dumpster outside housing for single soldiers on the base later that day.

Law enforcement officials confirmed to Military.com that the person of interest was still in custody as of Friday and no charges had been filed against him. The Army The Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating Roque’s death as a homicide.

Few details about the person of interest have been released; The law enforcement officers cited the ongoing investigation as the reason for concealing information about the case.

“Because this investigation is ongoing, we are unable to provide additional information at this time,” Mark Lunardi, a CID spokesman, told Military.com in a statement on Friday.

CID Special Agent John McCabe said at a news conference Thursday that the person of interest does not currently pose a threat to the community or base personnel.

“This is a tragedy. That’s something we never want to see happen,” Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck, commander of the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood, said at a news conference.

Beck said the FBI and other law enforcement agencies are assisting in the investigation.

“Our sincere condolences to the family,” he said. “But the reality is that we have to lead and continue to move forward in our mission, and we will do that by supporting CID and always providing the appropriate support and transparency to the family.”

Roque, from Indiana, was a K9 handler assigned to Fort Leonard Wood’s 5th Engineer Battalion, media previously reported reported. She joined the army in 2020. Her awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

“Sarah not only served our country bravely and honorably as a soldier,” Beck said. “She was also a daughter, sister and friend to many. The investigation remains a top priority for Fort Leonard Wood, and all agencies are working together to ensure a thorough and complete investigation.”
