5 killed when small jet crashes into car after takeoff in suburban Phoenix

MESA, Arizona. Four of the five people who died Tuesday when a small jet crashed into a car in Arizona have been identified.

Mesa police said those killed in the crash were Spencer Lindahl, 43; Rustin Randall, 48; Drew Kimball, 44; and Graham Kimball, 12. The driver of the vehicle was also killed, Mesa police said, but they declined to release the driver’s name pending identification.

Authorities said there were five Arizonans on board: the pilot, co-pilot and three passengers. One of the participants in the accident survived, but the police did not specify who exactly. That person was hospitalized with burns, Mesa police said.

The plane crashed on takeoff from Falcon Field Airport in Mesa, according to a police report. At 4:40 p.m., a Honda HA-420 light business jet collided with a vehicle near the airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Television news showed what appeared to be a large fire on a road near the airport.

The FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board and Mesa authorities are investigating the incident.

Mesa police said Wednesday, “Our condolences go out to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”
