Where to Celebrate Native American Heritage Month in Dallas-Fort Worth

November is Native American Heritage Month, a celebration dedicated to the indigenous people of North America. Here in North Texas, tribes like the Tawacon, Wichita, Kickapoo, Wichita, and Comanche called this area home and still do. If you want to get involved in Native American Heritage Month celebrations, here’s a look at some of the events happening in Dallas-Fort Worth.

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH CONTEST

The Intertribal Council of AT&T Workers will hold its fourth annual meeting. This event will feature Native American vendors and artisans. A dance competition is also part of the day. Men, women, teenagers, juniors and athletes of the golden age will take part.

Details: Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at AT&T Discovery District, 308 S. Akard St., Dallas. free.

NAHM PAUVAU PAGENT PRINCESS

Come learn more about Native American culture and watch young women demonstrate their spirit and knowledge, courtesy of the AT&T Intertribal Workers Council, a nonprofit group of Native Americans at the Dallas-based company. The competition will test contestants on culture, cultural talent and inter-tribal dances, among other topics. The winners will receive Miss Photogenic, Miss Congeniality and Essay Winner.

WE HAVE COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS

Dallas College will host a question and answer session in honor of Native American Heritage Month. Community organizer and interdisciplinary artist Amy Aguilar will be the guest speaker. She will discuss the importance of digital storytelling in relation to the history of her Coahuiltecan homeland in and around the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

Head to Richland College for a career workshop with Native American leaders and professionals working in advocacy, law and policy. They will talk about their roles in these fields and share more about how you can get involved in similar professions.
