A policeman hit a car during a Colonie | stop News

The officer suffered what were described as serious injuries and is being treated at Albany Medical Center, police said.

The tow truck driver was also injured during the incident. The driver received minor injuries. The driver of the tow truck was taken for examination.

Police said the crash happened just before 12:30 p.m. Saturday on the northbound Freeway just before exit 6-7 in Colon.

The officer stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation and the vehicle had to be towed, police said.

“While loading the vehicle onto the tow truck, the police officer and the tow truck operator were outside their vehicles when they were hit by the pickup truck,” the police said in a statement.

After the crash, the driver of the pickup truck and several witnesses stopped and called 911, police said.

The driver of the pickup truck was arrested by police later Saturday afternoon. The investigation was still ongoing.

Gov. Kathy Hochul offered her support via X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday afternoon.

“This afternoon, a New York State Police Officer was struck by a moving vehicle during a routine traffic stop in Colon,” Hochul wrote. “Every day @nyspolice goes out of their way to keep us safe. Our prayers are with the soldier and his family at this difficult time.”

State police earlier at X reported at 1:35 p.m. that the right lane of southbound Interstate 87 between exits 6 and 7 in Colonie, N.Y., was closed due to the crash and asked people to avoid the area.

Traffic cameras also showed a large copy of southbound traffic on the northbound carriageway past the twin bridges.
