Peter Obi reacts to Tinubu government taking several child protesters to court: ‘We should all be worried’

  • Peter Obi called on relevant Nigerian authorities to thoroughly investigate the “inhumane treatment” of minors in Abuja
  • Specifically, Obi called the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) as well as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

FCT, Abuja Peter Obi criticized the Bola Tinubu-led government for arraigning minors who participated in the ‘End Bad Governance’ protest.

Legit.ng had reported that a federal high court sit-in in Abuja, 76 detained “End Bad Governance” protesters, mostly malnourished minors, were prosecuted.

Judge Obiora Egwuattu has granted juvenile bail of €10 million each to 76 people arraigned for their involvement in the August 2024 “End Bad Governance” protests.

Reacting, Obi, the presidential candidate Labor Party (LP) in the 2023 election said the scenes were “disturbing and reprehensible”. The former governor of Anambra also spoke about the ill-treatment of children in custody.

Obi said in a statement:

“The crime these suspects, including minors, are charged with is protesting the mismanagement that has directly affected their livelihoods and is guaranteed to them by our constitution under democratic rule. Interestingly, most people in government today have used this aspect of the Constitution. as fighters for good governance while in opposition.

“Furthermore, our status presupposes that suspects deserve a certain dignity, even in a penitentiary, as human beings.

“The reason why we should all be concerned about this kind of situation is that we are part of a global community where human dignity should be respected.”

Sani tells Tinubu to drop the charges against the minors

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani urged the federal government led by President Tinubu, to immediately drop the charges against the minors who participated in the nationwide protests of August 1-10, 2024.

In a post on his X page, Sani described the incident as “pathetic and shameful”.
