A man who was shot by police in 2022 has pleaded guilty in the latest case

The 40-year-old Madison man pleaded guilty to a second drug-related crime after he was shot and killed by police during a botched arrest in February 2022.

Quadren L. Wilson pleaded guilty Friday to one count of passing cocaine to a police informant in February of this year and was sentenced to 18 months in prison, to begin after he completes his current term. conviction for drug trafficking in May 2022 in April 2021.

Wilson was sentenced to three years in prison in the 2022 case, but was released for good behavior in June 2023.

On February 3, 2022, an unarmed Wilson was shot in the back while in his car after fleeing from officers trying to arrest him on a Department of Corrections warrant on Madison’s Far East Side. One of the two state Justice Department agents who fired shots in the incident — but not the one whose rifle hit Wilson — was later charged with second-degree recklessly endangering safety, but a jury in March found him not guilty.

The other agent, Nathan Pesky, has not been charged, Wilson’s attorney, William Salton, said before Friday’s sentencing hearing. He said he plans to file a civil rights lawsuit in the next few weeks against several people involved in Wilson’s shooting.

On Friday, Dane County Assistant District Attorney Valerian Powell spoke for the sentence, which was finally handed down by District Judge Diane Schlipper. “The defendant has had quite a bit of anti-social behavior over the past 20 years,” Powell said.

Since 2002, Dane Wilson has been convicted of approximately 20 felonies and misdemeanors in the county, ranging from retail theft to drug trafficking.

Sulton said Wilson’s drug addiction drove him to deal drugs. He argued that allowing Wilson to serve Friday’s sentence would run concurrently with any sentence he receives in the 2022 case after his probation in that case is formally revoked.

“I think he can be successful as long as he can stay sober,” Salton said of his client, who has been in the Dane County Jail since March.

Wilson apologized to his family and friends on Friday and told Schlipper that he was “done and tired and I couldn’t take it anymore” and that he wanted to be there for his children.

“I just want to go out and be a better person,” he said. Those who study recidivism long ago discovered that the very fact of aging reduces the likelihood of re-offending.

Schlipper told Wilson, “It’s time, Mr. Wilson, to get serious about your life.”
