Safety on the road: flexible shifts for traffic police officers at night, on weekends, and on holidays

Beware of speeders and drunk drivers!

The Mpumalanga Traffic Department will now work flexible shifts to ensure officers are visible and reduce response times to traffic incidents around Middelburg.

Jackie Macey, Public Safety and Communications Council representative, will officially launch the flexible shift for the province’s traffic officers today.

Statistics have shown that most accidents happen on weekends and in the evening or early morning, when traffic police inspectors are not on duty.

In 2023, the highest number of traffic accidents and fatalities was recorded on Friday and Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Thanks to the flexible shift, traffic police inspectors will work on weekends and evenings on the routes identified as the most dangerous.

The flexible shift will also work during the festive season, which is usually characterized by heavy traffic and accidents.
