A British businessman will remain in custody on charges of murdering an Indonesian woman in Hong Kong

HONG KONG (AP) — A British businessman was remanded in custody Friday after being charged with manslaughter in Hong Kong over the death of an Indonesian woman near a waterfall in a park.

Jamie Tzevi Chapman, 34, pleaded not guilty in court and his lawyer did not ask for bail. The judge adjourned the case until January to allow time for further investigation.

Chapman and his wife, from Hong Kong, were arrested on Tuesday when they returned to the city from mainland China. Police said his wife was detained on suspicion of assisting a criminal and later released on bail pending further investigation.

Police said Chapman and the Indonesian woman went to a waterfall in a park on Hong Kong Island together on Sunday night. He left about half an hour later, and residents spotted the woman’s body in a pond below the falls on Monday morning, police said. She was hit in the head and drowned.

Mewi Novitasari, who was about 25 years old, worked as a domestic worker in Hong Kong but did not work for the suspect, police said.

She was from Silachap in Central Java province, Judha Nugraha, Indonesia’s director for the protection of citizens and legal entities, said from Indonesia.

The employment agency and the Indonesian consulate will facilitate the repatriation of the remains, while the consulate general will continue to oversee the investigation, he said.
