BC Ferries to load fewer vehicles on select Monday trips after commercial driver makes ‘unauthorized U-turn’

BC Ferries services between Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver) and Departure Bay (Nanaimo) will have fewer vehicles on Monday after an incident on the terminal’s transfer deck prompted structural engineers to be called out.

in messageferry operator says the driver of a commercial vehicle made an “unauthorized turn” on the transfer deck of the Horseshoe Bay Terminal earlier Monday afternoon.

Due to the weight of the vehicle, the Vancouver interchange is closed while crews inspect the concrete structure, according to a statement issued around 3 p.m.

The closure took place “out of an abundance of caution,” it said.

Sailing between Vancouver and Langdale (Sunny Coast) also affect.

This means that loading on all voyages between various destinations will be restricted to the main transport decks of ships until the end of Monday only.

People cannot stay in their cars on this deck, says BC Ferries.

“According to Transport Canada regulations, passengers must exit their vehicle after boarding if it has been loaded onto the vehicle’s enclosed main deck,” it explained.

“Customers who need to remain in their vehicle while sailing may consider traveling on our Tsawwassen to Duke Point route as an alternative.”
