SAPD officer suspended 30 days after drunken altercation while DJing at real estate gala

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio police officer has been suspended for 30 days after she was accused in March of causing a drunken disturbance at a real estate awards show where she was hired to act as a DJ.

Officer Christy Bush, who told cops she plays music at off-duty events as DJ Christy Rose, was originally slated for a 45-day suspension in August, city disciplinary records show.

The suspension was later reduced to 30 days after Bush met with SAPD Chief William McManus.

The March 16 incident at the University of the Incarnate Word’s Rosenberg Sky Room prompted UIW PD and later SAPD officers to respond to the scene.

UIW PD released the incident report and 11.5 hours of body camera footage taken following a public records request from KSAT earlier this month.

“I’m not going to stand here and look like a f***ing criminal”

Attendees of the gala concert told police that Bush loudly interrupted the host of the event while he was giving a speech on stage.

Describing the riot, a UIW officer recorded on his body-worm camera what he said was Bush cursing loudly and yelling, “Let’s go partying!”

A woman who attended the event was seen on a body-worn camera and told Bush: “I also knew you were sitting next to my son, you were very drunk and loud.”

Bush, 32, who was hired by the owner of a real estate company to play music from 10 p.m. until midnight, told officers she had turned on the music when audience members arrived at the awards ceremony hours before.

In the footage, she repeatedly complained that she had not been paid and that her contract required her to be paid before the set began.

“Let me ask her one thing. Do you think I can organize such an event and not be able to pay you?” – asked Bush the host of the event.

A second off-duty SAPD officer, Jonathan Kavanagh, was escorted out by UIW police after a heated confrontation between him, the host and a friend of the host, who told police he was sent to check on Bush. proper conditions for performing as a DJ.

The footage shows Kavanagh being pulled away from the two men as the host tells Kavanagh to take his hand away from his face.

SAPD officials confirmed this month that Kavanagh was not disciplined for the incident.

The host of the event told KSAT by phone that there were 350 people at the event and that Bush was clearly intoxicated while waiting for her set.

He said he was contacted by an SAPD internal affairs investigator late this summer to give a statement, but was not told Bush had been suspended over the incident.

Bush told officers she had two alcoholic drinks, then said she had one, then said she had “one wine” but didn’t finish the drink, according to the footage.

Several UIW officers noted on the footage that Bush had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.

Several attendees told police that Bush was intoxicated, according to the recording.

While waiting for SAPD officers to arrive, Bush argued with UIW police as they refused to allow her to briefly approach her vehicle.

“It’s not worth my career. All I want to do is go get my vape. It’s not worth anything. I just want to go downstairs, go to my truck, get my vape. Can I go turn off my vape please?” Bush asked.

After the UIW police chief told Bush no, Bush responded, “Why? I didn’t bother. This is not a criminal offense.”

The chief then told Bush that the incident had caused the riot.

“I’m not going to stand here and look like a f***ing criminal. You are right. You set a great example. And that’s why we should just do our duty and risk our lives instead of doing shit for four hours,” Bush said before finishing her remarks and taking a seat at the entrance to the hall.

Bush was then questioned by an SAPD sergeant in the back hallway of the facility, as seen in the footage.

Bush’s SAPD disciplinary documents state that after a female SAPD officer arrived on the scene with a cadet, Bush asked the cadet, “What the hell are you looking at?”

According to the data, no one was prosecuted after the gala incident, and it did not lead to criminal charges.

In the end, Bush left the hall without completing her set, as can be seen in the footage.

Cavani was eventually allowed back inside, escorted by police, to break into Bush’s DJ equipment.

Bush was suspended for violations including drinking, being rude to the public/co-workers, disorderly conduct and failing to report for work, city disciplinary records show.

Bush did not return a phone call from KSAT seeking comment for this story.
