An explosion at a Turkish explosives factory killed 12 people, repeating past incidents

A powerful explosion ripped through an explosives factory in northwestern Turkey on Tuesday, killing 12 people and injuring five, officials said.

The footage shows fragments of glass and metal scattered near the factory, where ambulances were parked.

“According to preliminary data, 12 employees were killed and four were taken to hospital with injuries as a result of the explosion” in the Karesi district of Balikesir province, local governor Ismail Ustaoglu said.

“I wish God’s mercy to our fallen citizens and speedy recovery to the wounded,” he added.

Officials later revised the number of injured to five and added that they were not in serious condition.

No personnel remained at the factory and the fire was extinguished, they added.
