Auxerre uses a unique Ligue 1 rule against Lyon.

A controversial penalty decision between Auxerre and Lyon this weekend saw a little-known Ligue 1 rule applied.

With the score tied at 0-0 near the end of the first half, Lyon were awarded a penalty when Georges Mikoutadze (23) hit Gideon Mensa (26).

The visitors contested that referee Jeremy Stina had already awarded a goal kick earlier in the move. Auxerre assistant coach Jean-Marie Stephanopoli was sent off in the confusion after a VAR review led to Lyon being awarded a penalty.

AJA captain Jubal (31) lodged a formal complaint with the referee, known as a written technical caution.

In French football, such a request can be made after the referee’s decision and before the restart of the game, so there was a delay of more than 15 minutes before the penalty for Lyon.

Article 559 of the rules of French football says: “A caution on technical matters is only admissible if it is made by the umpire by the complaining captain during a stoppage of play, and which is a consequence of the contested decision.”

If the challenge is successful, the target in question can be excludedtherefore the match will be lost. This reserve must be sent within 48 hours by registered letter to the Professional Football League and together with the sum of 76 euros.

Mikautadze stepped up and converted from 12 yards. DAZN Jubal was seen complaining to the referee, although the team did not act on the complaint after the final whistle.

It meant the 2-2 draw would stand and Auxerre manager Christophe Pelissier said he had spoken to the referee at the end of the match.

Auxerre came from behind twice to earn a point and are now unbeaten in consecutive Ligue 1 matches, climbing to 13th in the table.
