Delhi High Court cracks down on unauthorized tree felling

The Delhi High Court has taken a strong stand against unauthorized felling of trees by issuing a show cause notice to the Deputy Conservator of Forests. The report alleges that the official is not complying with the Delhi Tree Preservation Act, underscoring the critical role of flora conservation in the urban landscape.

Justice Jasmeet Singh criticized the Deputy Conservator of Forests of the Southern Division of Forests for inadequate supervision of tree felling permits. The court emphasized the importance of proper inspections and compliance with environmental legislation, citing the general unsatisfactory state of affairs in the current system.

In response, the court banned further pruning until the forest department laid down clear guidelines. The move aims to prevent abuse of power and unauthorized deforestation by ensuring that actions are in line with the conservation objectives set out in the statute.
