WATERFORD. CT (WFSB) – Crews rescued a 46-year-old woman from her car after it plunged into the Niantic River Monday night.

Waterford A&E were called to the incident at 8.03pm

The initial investigation revealed that the woman was driving a 2010 Dodge Nitro westbound on Daniels Avenue when she lost control, causing the vehicle to go over a guardrail and into the water.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Help in the rescue came from good Samaritans, as well as policemen and firefighters.

The accident happened right next to the house of the husband and wife, who rushed to help.

William Lesky, one of the Samaritans, recounted the terrifying experience: “I just jumped in and these two women followed me and we got as close to her as we could. We saw that she was conscious. We tried to talk to her and comfort her. I unbuckled her seat belt and we got her to safety.”

The group waded over a hundred feet from shore to reach the woman, who turned out to be a friend of the family.

“I’ve never seen anything like that in my whole life, so it was right next to our house … and we knew her, which made it even worse,” said Juliet Lashey.

The officer was also taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The investigation of the accident is ongoing.
