South Milwaukee indicted; driving the wrong way on I-794, causing an accident

36 years old South Milwaukee A man is accused of driving the wrong way on I-794 and causing a crash that seriously injured a woman on Sunday, October 20. Matthew Sinclair is charged and faces a single charge of first degree reckless endangerment.

According to the criminal complaint, a Milwaukee County a sheriff’s deputy was dispatched around 10:30 pm on Sunday, October 20th to eastbound I-794 near James Lovell Street for a crash. Dispatchers for Milwaukee County The sheriff’s office learned from multiple 911 callers that there was a collision involving a wrong-way driver and two vehicles were disabled in traffic.

A deputy who arrived at the scene treated the defendant, Matthew Sinclair, who was driving a silver sedan. A female driver was trapped inside her vehicle — and told a deputy she was in severe pain “throughout her body.” When the woman was extricated from the vehicle, she was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

Deputies spoke with several witnesses at the scene. One says “she was driving east on I-794 and saw a driver coming at her on the wrong side of the freeway. (Witness) stated that in order to avoid a collision, she quickly moved into the right lane and activated her hazard lights to warn the people behind her. The witness stated that shortly after moving, she heard a loud bang,” the complaint states.

Another witness testified that “a car was driving west along the eastbound lane parallel to him.” The witness stated that “his speed was 50-55 mph at the time, but the wrong-way vehicle was traveling faster than him,” the complaint states.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) cameras at I-794 and 2nd Street captured the crash.

Later, the deputy spoke with the defendant at Fredtert Hospital. The deputy noted “the smell of intoxication coming from the defendant’s breath. After that, the defendant stopped answering questions and refused all tests for health disorders, as well as refused to take a chemical blood test,” the complaint states.

As a result of the collision, the woman suffered “numerous broken ribs, three vertebrae, a fractured tailbone and internal bleeding,” the statement said.
