Suspect in 1973 San Rafael murder extradited from Idaho

SAN RAFAEL, CA – The suspect in a San Rafael homicide more than 50 years ago was extradited from Idaho earlier this week.

Michael Eugene Mullen was extradited from Lemhi County after Idaho State Police arrested him in connection with the death of Swedish citizen Nina “Nadine” Fischer, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday.

Fisher was sexually assaulted and then murdered in November 1973 in her San Rafael home. The case was frozen until 2021, when the Marin County Sheriff’s Office investigative division referred the case to the state Department of Justice’s Family Tracing Program for assistance.

A few months later, they found a tip, and in 2024, the sheriff’s office confirmed it and named Mullen, 75, as a suspect.

Mullen will remain in custody at the Marin County Jail pending trial, officials said.

It is unclear whether Mullen knew Fisher.
