As a result of the explosion of the house in Avondale, an elderly woman died, 5 were injured

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – An explosion at a mobile home in Avondale early Monday morning (Dec. 2) left one person dead and five others injured, including two children, according to Jefferson County authorities.

The explosion happened shortly before 6:30 a.m. in the 500 block of Avondale Garden Road.

Emergency crews were already in the area responding to a gas leak caused by construction work when they heard the explosion. Jefferson County Fire officials said the leak was caused by a gas line damaged by a truck near a construction site.

Atmos Energy crews are currently checking gas meters in the area to ensure there are no additional risks.

At the time of the explosion, there were six people in the mobile home. An 87-year-old woman, identified by family members as Delores Gabriel, died, and five others were taken to hospital. Gabriela’s daughter and some of her grandchildren lived with her at home.

State fire marshals, Jefferson County firefighters and sheriff’s deputies remain on the scene assessing the damage and investigating the cause of the explosion. The mobile home was completely destroyed, and charred debris was scattered across the area.

Visibly confused, the neighbors watched the remains of the house smolder. Although no one was willing to speak on camera, the emotional impact on the community was evident.

The pipeline has since been secured, but the scene remains active as officials try to determine the events that led to the tragedy.
