Germiston SPCA is appealing for animal safety during Diwali celebrations

With Diwali, the Festival of Lights, approaching on November 1, the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA is reminding the community that the safety and welfare of animals is a priority.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is an important festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains around the world.

The holiday symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil.

Millions of people around the world, including many locals, celebrate this event with various celebrations, lighting up their homes with lights and enjoying spectacular fireworks.

The tradition includes lighting actions (clay lamps), fireworks, family gatherings, traditional dress and cultural events.

The SPCA warns that fireworks can cause suffering to animals and offers the following advice to pet owners:

• Stay home to calm your pets
• Minimize noise from TV, music or white noise
• Close windows and curtains
• Ask local veterinarians for advice
• Consider sedation.

“We wish all celebrants a happy Diwali and call for responsible holidays, respecting the welfare of animals and harmony in society.

“If you plan to use fireworks, please notify your neighbors in advance and ensure the care and safety of your pets.
