British politician Mike Amesbury has been suspended from the Labor Party after a video emerged of him punching a man

The Labor Party has suspended its MP Mike Amesbury after a video emerged of him punching a man, British media reported on Sunday (October 27th).

Amesbury was the Labor MP for Runcorn and Helsby. The Guardian reports that the incident happened last Friday (October 25) in Frodsham.

The party’s decision means Amesbury, 55, will not be considered as a Labor MP until further notice.

“You’re not going to threaten me again?”

A video of the incident released by the Mail shows Amesbury punching the man in the face and knocking him to the ground before standing over him and punching him six more times in the head.

The footage also shows Amesbury shouting: “You’re not going to threaten me again, are you?”

The Guardian report said the 55-year-old’s suspension from the Labor Party came 24 hours after footage first emerged of the aftermath of the incident, showing him screaming and bystanders expressing shock at what had happened.

This video shows Amesbury being pushed away by a bystander.

The Labor Party reacted to the incident

Following the release of footage of the aftermath of the incident, a Labor spokesman said Amesbury had contacted Cheshire Police to report the incident and that he would co-operate with any inquiries.

On Sunday morning, Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson said Amesbury was fully cooperating with police.

“He went to the police himself and it is right that the police are now looking into this matter, investigating and deciding what action, if any, is necessary,” Philipson added.
