How to write a resume in 2024, according to experts

No matter how experienced you are, applying for a new job is emotional roller coaster. This is time spent looking for your next role, writing your resume, etc job interview and all the troublesome waiting time in between. This has become increasingly difficult over the past few years organize a quality concert in your field of expertise.

Personally, interviews have always been my forte. As a natural chatterbox, when I’m in the room and talking, I know I have a chance. The most difficult receiving interview based on my resume.

In theory, writing a resume is simple. A resume should include your relevant work experience to show a potential employer how qualified and awesome you are. Although resume requirements may vary from industry to industry, there are some mandatory details you should include in your resume.

So, to make sure we’re all creating the best resume we can, regardless of industry, I spoke to two business experts about their top resume writing tips, dos and don’ts.

What resumes are required?

There’s a lot to keep in mind when you’re lining up to apply for an exciting new gig. Just remember these important tips and tricks to make your resume stand out.

Make sure you have important details

According to the entrepreneur and owner The Boss on heels Podcast Lara Nersesyansometimes these obvious details are lost.

“Make sure your resume includes your personal information, such as your name, phone number, email address, and a link to your LinkedIn profile,” she says.

Lara also notes that it’s important to make sure the information you provide on your resume matches what you have on your LinkedIn page.

“While discrepancies may be innocent in nature and may simply have gone unnoticed, it’s important that you demonstrate a solid and consistent resume across all channels,” she explains.

Make sure your spelling and grammar are perfect

As obvious as it sounds, making sure your spelling and grammar is incredibly important.

Roxanne Calderauthor, founder and managing director of a successful recruitment agency EST10says that the clarity of a well-formatted resume can help you stand out.

“Your resume should be easy to read and visually balanced, with consistent font, formatting, and spacing,” she explains.

“Make sure grammar, punctuation, and layout are accurate and clear. Although this may seem obvious, these details are often overlooked. Your resume is the first impression you make on potential employers, and it’s ultimately a reflection of your work.

“You should also use full dates, months and years, and it’s very important to explain career gaps.”

Customize it for every job

While it’s tempting to send out the same resume to every job you apply for, both Roxanne and Lara agree that each resume and cover letter you submit should be tailored to each job application. This way you can make sure that your skills match the specific skills that the company is looking for.

“A broad resume that generally says what you’re looking for and your experience will give you vague results,” says Lara.

“The more individual and specific you can make your resume, the better chance you have of standing out.”

Keep it short and sweet

As well as Sabrina Carpenterit’s important to keep your resume short and sweet. You may have extraordinary experience in your field, but employers don’t want to flip through a stack of pages.

“Let your resume have no more than two or three pages. If you have a long list of previous jobs, focus on experience from the last ten years,” suggests Roxanne.

“Briefly describe previous positions or give employers an opportunity to review your past career by including a line like ‘Full resume upon request.'”

Summary no-no

Just as there are tons of recommended tips to make your resume stand out, there are tons of things you should also avoid.

Reject inappropriate experiences

As we move from job to job, our respective experiences change. For example, I worked at McDonald’s throughout high school and university. When I first started applying for media jobs, I included my experience at McDonald’s to show that I was a reliable employee who had real work experience—even if it was in a different industry.

Now that I have serious media experience, I will forego my McDonald’s experience for more relevant information.

“Don’t include personal information that’s out of date or not relevant to the position you’re applying for,” says Lara.

“While you may be proud of winning a swim meet in high school, address accomplishments that are recent and relevant to the role.”

Leave the salary and benefits information for later

Whether you’re aiming for a certain salary or number of days away from home, experts advise keeping this information handy for later in the hiring process.

“Don’t include details like salary expectations, job benefits or other inquiries in your resume,” advises Lara.

“This shows the potential employer that you are more interested in your personal plan than what the job requires. Leave these details up for discussion throughout the interview process.”

Know your own resume (and tell the truth)

I think most of us would agree that adding a little extra oomph to your resume is not uncommon. I once said that I know Microsoft Excel. I know how to enter data into the little boxes, but don’t you dare ask me to enter these automatically calculated codes.

However, companies have methods to track when you’ve gone too far and outright lied about your experience.

“Today, companies are looking for people who have embellished their CV,” warns Roksana.

“With this in mind, many companies will test your knowledge of their own CV! It might sound a little crazy, but if you’re not good at what you write down, you’re bound to cause a few alarms.

“Employers expect you to be smart about your work history and any other information on your resume, including dates of employment. Remember that your resume is your road map to the interview, so be prepared to answer questions based on its content.”
