A stunning new report explains why the Los Angeles Dodgers can not only win the World Series, but are a real threat to take away the New York Yankees’ best player this winter.

With another victory Saturday night, the Dodgers are just two wins away from bringing the franchise its eighth MLB championship. It was the position they expected after dealing out more than a billion dollars in contracts last offseason.

The Dodgers already had one of the best teams in baseball after the 2023 MLB season. However, they were able to sign the best player in the game last winter, Shohei Ohtani. Then they added the most hyped rookie free agent pitcher, Yoshinbobu Yamamoto. And they even signed veteran slugger Teoscar Hernandez.

They have a team built to win it all in 2024 and for many years to come. However, there are reports that the talent-laden club could add another superstar this winter. On Sunday New York Post MLB Insider Jon Heyman reported that the Los Angeles Dodgers are “interested” in pursuing free agent-to-be Juan Soto after the season.

But given their already huge salaries, how could they afford a contract worth around $600 million?

It seems completely absurd that a team already paying the richest contract in MLB history would end up adding the second richest. However, Heyman explained in his report how realistic this might actually be.

As most baseball fans know, Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million contract is full of deferrals that will pay him a large portion in a decade. The prevailing opinion in the game was that he was paid approximately $43.7 million. This number is based on an estimate from the players’ union. But Gaiman claims he makes about $30 million a year.

  • Juan Soto contract (projection): 12 years, $610 million

So adding a deal for Soto that pays him between $40 million and $50 million a year wouldn’t be as surprising a tax hit as first thought. The MLB insider then added a fascinating tidbit about the cash windfall the Los Angeles Dodgers experienced off the field due to Ohtani being on the roster.

“But the far greater benefit is the enormous revenue the Dodgers generate through sponsorships and marketing opportunities,” Gaiman wrote. “Two Asian airlines are sponsoring the Dodgers,” the LA Times reported. It is said that the profit of the club is actually many times higher than the value of Ohtani’s record contract.

All of which means the Dodgers are bringing in a ton of revenue from Ohtani, as expected. That way, they can have an insane salary with a serious tax bill and still make a significant profit to compete for the title for the next decade.
