Ja’Marr Chase & Joe Burrow on Game Changing Play

Ja’Marr Chase & Joe Burrow on Game Changing Play

CINCINNATI – There’s usually no key moment to circle in a 20-point loss when the defense allows the opposition to score on seven of its eight possessions.

But there was a clear and obvious tipping point at Paycor Stadium on Sunday afternoon White flag Cincinnati Bengals 37-17 loss by white field to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Trailing by seven after allowing Philadelphia touchdowns on three straight possessions, the Bengals had a third-and-1 with less than two minutes left in the third quarter.

But the game clock was down to less than 10 seconds and the offense was still running, forcing head coach Zach Taylor to call a timeout.

The Eagles’ defense stonewalled Zach Moss for no gain, and Taylor made a decision that looked more like a vote of no confidence in his defense than unwavering faith in his offense, going for it on fourth-and-1 from his own 39.

The Bengals threw Ja’Marr Chase left to right, defensive end Joe Burrow threw him a screen behind the line of scrimmage, and the Philadelphia defense swallowed Chase for a 2-yard loss.

Taylor expressed his disappointment with the challenge.

“The play didn’t work, and it’s 100 percent my fault,” he said.

Burrow gave a brief assessment of the play.

“Threw it to Ja’Marr and it caught,” he said.

Chase wished the call had never happened.

“Only one call I wish I could take back and change to something else,” he said. “But we called and it happened.”

Chase caught the ball more than 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage with no Cincinnati player in front of him to block.

Philadelphia rookie Cooper DeJean dropped Chase for a 2-yard loss, and even if he missed, C.J. Gardner was there.

“I don’t mind being aggressive, it’s just that they were on it,” Chase said.

The Bengals defense held the Eagles to a field goal, but the 10-point deficit forced the Bengals to be even more aggressive and risky.

And on the next possession, Burrow hit a deep pass to Chase up the middle of the field, and backup cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, who was in for the injured Darius Slay, passed to Gardner-Johnson for just the Eagles’ third score. season and Burrow’s third interception.

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia offense buried the Bengals from there with another touchdown to make it 34-17.

And after that, all that remained was to kill the clock.

“It felt like we needed to be aggressive,” Taylor said. “It didn’t work out. So it’s frustrating. I put it on myself. It’s a situation where I felt like we needed to be aggressive and get a score on that possession, given that we were down by seven. And every time it doesn’t happen, it’s not good. , obviously, you are thinking long and hard about this decision.”
