Dare County authorities are investigating after an elderly couple was hit by a car

DARE COUNTY, NC (WITN) – Authorities say two pedestrians are recovering after being struck by a car in Negs Head on Friday.

According to public information officer Roberta Thurman, it happened at 5:38 p.m. while they were walking in the crosswalk at 7228 South Virginia Dare Trail.

They say the two victims, identified as a 71-year-old and a 69-year-old from Sunbury, North Carolina, were airlifted to Norfolk Hospital.

Officials say the driver, a 63-year-old woman from Columbia, North Carolina, was cited for failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.

They say there is no indication that speed or impairment were factors in the incident, which remains under investigation.

As of this morning, both individuals are expected to have survived.

The City of Nags Head urges all drivers and pedestrians to use caution and remain alert, especially during the early evening hours when visibility may be reduced.
