The documentary Powley: The Hunt for Justice screens at the Salt Film Festival on Sunday, December 1

The film, which is shown on Sunday, includes archival footage from the landmark trial that took place in Sioux Sainte-Cy. Marie

The Powley case affirmed the Métis identity and rights as Indigenous peoples under section 35 of the Canadian Constitution.

Contains archival footage and interviews with Métis citizens of Sault Ste. Marie, as well as new research and commentary from judges, current leaders, and others involved in the case, TPowley Documentary: The Hunt for Justice tells the legacy that Powley’s decision to defy the Canadian government left on the Métis nation.

“Directing Powley Documentary: The Hunt for Justice It has been an honor and a responsibility to share the story of Steve and Roddy Powley’s historic fight for Métis mining rights,” says director Matt LeMay of Indigenous Geographic in a press release.

“In this film, we aimed to capture the personal sacrifices, cultural significance and lasting impact of the Powley case, paying tribute to the resilience of the Métis Nation and inspiring further efforts for recognition and justice.”

Regarding the reaction of local Métis communities to the screening of the film at the festival, Ontario Métis Nation Regional Council member Mitch Case is encouraging community members to attend a screening of the film this weekend.

“Hotel Sault Ste. The Marie Métis community is extremely proud to be home to the iconic Powley Decision,” says Case.

“As Métis denial grows, it is more important than ever to tell our stories. Every Métis citizen, especially our youth, should watch this documentary and be proud of the determination and resilience of our communities.”
