Kaushambi (UP), Nov 29 (PTI) A court on Friday sentenced a man to 10 years in prison for raping a Dalit woman in a 27-year-old case, a lawyer said.

Special Judge (SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act) Shireen Zaidi found Avadhesh Shukla guilty and fined him Rs 6,000.

Additional District Counsel Pankaj Sonkar said the victim lodged a complaint with the police about the incident on March 11, 1997. She said that Shukla dragged her into a field, raped her and threatened to kill her.

A case under sections 376 (punishment for rape) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC and under the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act has been registered at the Saini police station, the lawyer said.

Sonkar said a judge found Shukla guilty on Friday and sentenced him to 10 years in prison. The court also fined him 6,000 rubles.
