Pennsylvania woman pleads guilty to embezzling more than ,000 in Social Security benefits

A Pennsylvania woman pleaded guilty in court after embezzling more than $90,000 from Social Security funds.

Patti Merlo, 66, of Punxsutton, pleaded guilty Nov. 25 to violating federal wire fraud laws.

According to information provided to the court, between approximately May 2016 and January 2022, Merlo embezzled about $91,300 in Social Security benefits she knew she was not entitled to.

Merlot’s sentencing was set for March 26, 2025. The law carries a maximum total penalty of up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both.

The Social Security Administration – Office of the Inspector General led the investigation into this case.
