It is not clear what happened in the buildup to the moments captured on film.

In a statement released before the Daily Mail footage emerged, Cheshire Police said: “At 02:48 BST on Saturday 26 October, police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham.

“The caller reported that a man attacked him on the main street. Investigations are ongoing.”

Posting on his Facebook page on Saturday, the 55-year-old backbencher said: “I was involved in an incident last night after I felt threatened after a night out with friends.

“This morning I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what had happened.

“I will not be making any public comment but will of course co-operate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.”

Amesbury was the Labor MP for Cheshire from 2017 and was a shadow minister from 2018 to 2024.

In the July general election, he won his constituency with a majority of 14,696 votes.
