A woman was dragged into an alleyway and repeatedly punched in the face and head during a horrific sexual assault in Londonderry.

The attack happened in the early hours of Sunday, October 27 at around 1.15am in the Lecky Road area of ​​the city.

A 50-year-old woman was approached by an unknown man who dragged her to a nearby alley, where he sexually assaulted her, and also hit her several times in the face and hit her head against the wall.

Detective Chief Inspector Crothers said: “She suffered serious facial and other injuries as a result of this horrific ordeal, from which she was only able to escape after her attacker let her go.

“The woman was able to signal for help, and the suspect fled the scene on foot.

“She required hospital treatment for her injuries and is understandably very upset and shocked by what has happened. Specialist officers will continue to support her.

“Our inquiries continue today so you will see an increased police presence in the area.

“The suspect is a white man, of broad build with dark hair, wearing a short dark puffer jacket and light-colored sneakers.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area of ​​Lecky Road between 1.15am and 1.35am this morning and may have witnessed what happened or noticed anything suspicious to contact police on 101 quoting the number 323 10/27/24.

“We would also be particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have dashcam, CCTV or mobile footage of the area during this time period for us to investigate.

“Due to the time change this morning – CCTV, home and car systems may contain time-stamped footage to reflect this. Please take this into account when reviewing all relevant material.’
