Popular TikTok user Recently, Amber Matthews, who goes by the name “Ambamelia”. published a video of its destruction a string of flags outside a restaurant in New Jersey… probably as a pro-Palestinian gesture. But there was one big problem…

The flags Matthews destroyed were Greek, not Israeli.

The incident, which happened in March at Efi’s Gyro, was posted on Oct. 15 by Matthews and has garnered millions of views on the social media app. That led to the 23-year-old being charged Tuesday with bias and intimidation, according to the Montclair Police Department.

Police began an investigation in March after the restaurant’s owner, Efi Michalis, reported that an unknown woman had entered the establishment. The suspect tore down a series of flags and decorative lights, allegedly yelling that “they’re killing children,” according to Montclair Local News.

in application to Michalis explained to the New York Post last week that what happened was not a coordinated stunt. She claimed her staff were “surprised” by what happened.

“It wasn’t planned and it wasn’t calculated in any way,” she said. “The young woman destroyed my property.”

After the report was initially filed, a Montclair police investigator looked into it by reviewing video from the restaurant. The investigator also notified the Essex County District Attorney’s Office and the state Attorney General’s Office.

Montclair local news too shared a statement from Police Chief Todd Conforti about the ongoing investigation.

“Montclair is a community committed to treating all people with dignity and respect. I hope this investigation sends a clear message that our agency will not tolerate any form of harassment or discrimination, and that offenders will be held accountable for their actions,” Conforti said.

There were no leads in the case until Matthews posted a video on TikTok on October 15 titled “Then I mistakenly thought the Greek flag was the Israeli flag and took down the restaurant flag.

Matthews is scheduled to appear in Newark Superior Court on Dec. 3.
