CHICAGO (WLS) — The Chicago Police Department and the Office of Police Civil Responsibility are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday morning on the city’s North Side.

The officers exchanged gunfire with the armed suspect after they responded to the scene of an earlier shooting, police said.

People who live in West Ridge told ABC7 it was horrifying to find out what happened. Law enforcement officers were conducting an inspection all day, and the suspect is now in the hospital.

The Chicago Police Department announced the incident at a press conference Saturday afternoon.

The Chicago Police Department released new information Saturday about the officer-involved shooting in West Rogers Park.

Chicago police said the 39-year-old victim was shot about 9:35 a.m. while they were walking in the 2600 block of West Farwell Avenue. The armed criminal approached the victim from behind and shot him in the shoulder.

Police officers and medics who arrived in the neighborhood immediately provided assistance to the victim, and the suspect fled.

“It shows that the people in the area are good, they will stop to help other people,” resident John Wong said. “That’s one thing I like about the area.”

Around 9:55 a.m., the 23-year-old criminal came out of the alley and fired at officers and medics, police said.

It’s a nice residential neighborhood, but we’ve noticed that, like any other neighborhood in Chicago, there’s more of an element of crime.

The suspect continued to exchange gunfire with officers for about two minutes, Chicago police officials said.

The offender was shot multiple times by officers in the 6800 block of North Washtenaw Avenue, police said. Law enforcement officers helped the man, he was taken to a local hospital, where he was initially in serious condition.

People who live near the scene say that such acts of violence have become too common in their area.

“We like the area because it’s a nice residential area, but we’ve noticed that, like any other area in Chicago, there’s more crime here,” Wong said. “More security threats from shootings and carjackings.”

Police said the 39-year-old victim was treated for a gunshot wound and released from the hospital. The gender and identity of the victim were not known.

No police officers or CFD members were injured in the incident, CPD said.

There is no additional information. CPD and COPA are continuing to investigate.
