Donegal County Council has been shortlisted for the prestigious Local Authority of the Year award at this year’s Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards.

The awards ceremony will take place in Dublin on Thursday 21 November and Donegal County Council is one of three local authorities shortlisted for this top award.

Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr. Niamh Kennedy says she is delighted to see Donegal County Council as one of the top three local authorities in Ireland.

She added: “I am delighted to see Donegal County Council as one of the top local authorities in the country and it really speaks to the tireless work councilors and council staff do every day for the people of Donegal.

“We are lucky to have such a positive and can-do attitude in Donegal and although we face many challenges, we are never shy about putting Donegal and the people of Donegal first.”

John G. McLaughlin, chief executive of Donegal County Council, also welcomed the recognition.

He said: “This is an excellent reflection of the work of the Council and the ambitious approach it has taken over recent years in a number of areas. This includes investment in economic and entrepreneurial development, housing capital, urban and rural regeneration, roads, green routes and active travel, climate action, social inclusion and community development, as well as a broad cultural development programme.

“It also speaks to the innovation and creativity of our members and staff, as well as the collaborative approach we take, working with a range of partners and stakeholders to deliver a range of projects and initiatives.”

The Awards for Excellence in Local Government are held annually by Chambers Ireland. A number of other Donegal County Council projects were also shortlisted in various categories, including: Energy Modernization Program in the Climate Change category; Sound! Soundtrack Festival in the “Festival of the Year” category; A Beach Accessibility Model for Improving Health and Wellbeing – A Strategic Approach in the Health and Wellbeing Category; The Wonder of Weave – showcasing Irish and Scottish tweed in the Heritage and Human Environment category, Food Coast Donegal in the Economic Development category and Burtonport & Arranmore – Harbor to Island Regeneration in the Supporting Resilient Communities category.

The results will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at 7:30 p.m.
