Teenagers arrested over Mooroolbark arson

Officers from Murolbark have arrested two boys following a fire in Murolbark yesterday afternoon.

It is alleged that the teenagers deliberately set fire to the premises behind the school in Cambridge Street at around 5.50pm.

The fire quickly spread to several trees before burning a large area of ​​nearby grass.

Two witnesses chased after the boys, and while running, called the local police station to alert the police.

The police detained the couple nearby and took them into custody, where they were interviewed.

Both boys were given a warning and released.

Fortunately, no one was injured, and the fire did not spread to neighboring buildings.

The police will investigate and take action to apprehend those responsible if a fire is deemed suspicious, regardless of whether it was deliberate or reckless.

Anyone found guilty of recklessly or intentionally causing a forest fire faces up to 15 years in prison.

Lighting a fire on a total fire ban day can result in a fine of up to $46,000 or up to two years in prison.

The community also plays an extremely important role in forest fire prevention and remains key in reporting reckless or suspicious behaviour.
