Guernsey Police have released a new recruitment video

Guernsey Police have released a new recruitment video

The 55-second video includes footage of a police officer performing CPR on St Julian’s Avenue, helping lost children, pulling a woman up a cliff and arresting a suspected drink driver.

The footage is taken from incidents in 2022 and 2023, as well as earlier this year.

In the first three hours of publication on Facebook, there were 60 reactions to the video – all positive.

Guernsey Police said they aimed to give an understanding of what they were doing by using real body-worn footage.

“We wanted to highlight the breadth of police work and show things that people wouldn’t assume police officers do on a daily basis, when all the types of incidents shown are typical of normal police work,” the spokesman said.

Members of the public featured in the video have been anonymous due to blurring, although those who were able to identify themselves were contacted and gave consent for their clips to be used.

In 2020, police released another recruitment video showing explosions and a car chase, which garnered national media attention and was mocked on Have I Got News For You.

A follow-up video a year later gave a much more relaxed look at the different roles available in the police force.

Recently, the police have had problems with recruitment.

The latest annual report – for 2023 – lists 139 officers, with 17 officers leaving the service and 19 recruited during the previous year.

The then chief of law enforcement, Ruari Hardy, said at the time that they had failed to meet the minimum operational numbers.

Job candidates need integrity, good communication and problem-solving skills, and a willingness to adapt to change.

The salary ranges from £38,877 to £54,445 per annum.

Successful applicants will start 10 weeks of full-time training early next year, followed by a two-year probationary period on relevant shifts.
