Rahul asked to appear in Pune court on December 2 – ThePrint –

Pune, Nov 18 (PTI) A Pune court has ordered Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to appear before the court in person on December 2 in connection with a defamation complaint filed against him by the grandnephew of Hindutva icon V.D. Savarkar.

Satyaki Savarkar filed a complaint in the Pune court alleging that Gandhi in his speech in London in March 2023 said that Savarkar had written in a book that he and five or six of his friends once beat up a Muslim and he (Savarkar) felt happy According to the request, Savarkar did not write this anywhere.

The court asked the police to investigate the allegations and draw up a report. Vishrambaug police station conducted an investigation and declared the complaint to be true.

On October 4, a Special Court for MP/MLA cases presided over by Joint Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Amol Shinde summoned Gandhi to appear before it on October 23.

However, Gandhi did not appear as it was said that he had not received the summons.

Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, counsel for petitioner Satyaki Savarkar, told PTI that he approached the court on Monday, praying to summon Gandhi.

Advocate Milind Pawar approached the court on Gandhi’s behalf and said the Congress leader would appear before the court the next day, Kolhatkar said.

“However, we objected to Jadhav representing Gandhi as no ‘vakalatnams or pursis’ were represented in the court. Advocate Jadhav told the court that Gandhi would appear before the court under any circumstances. In this regard, the court asked Gandhi to appear before the court on December 2,” Kolhatkar said.
