Kottayam: Authorities Institute of Nursing EducationChuttipara in Pathanamthitta, under the state government’s Center for Professional and Advanced Studies (CPAS), are under scrutiny following the death of the Thiruvananthapuram native Ammu Sajiyev. Ammu was a fourth year Bachelor of Nursing student. On Monday, the ABVP student outfit organized a march to the director’s office. However, the college authorities claim that there was no fault on their part.
Authorities said Ammu’s father had complained that some students were mentally harassing her. Based on the complaint and the written memo, three students were inspected. Authorities also noted that the four students were friends.
The principal received the complaint on October 27, and the next day authorities spoke with four students. They provided a written statement that all issues were settled. Later on November 7, one of the students filed a complaint about the lack of a logbook. After that, there was also a controversy regarding the students’ tour.
Ammu slipped from the third floor of the NSS hostel in Vettippuram on November 15. She succumbed to her injuries on the way to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Although no suicide notes were found, she wrote in her diary, “I quit.”
Ammu’s family denied that the college authorities took any action on their complaint. They alleged that Ammu’s life was in danger, as stated in the written complaint. The family claims that she had health problems and the three students bothered her in many ways. Amma was also appointed as the tour coordinator when she did not want to go on the study tour. The father’s complaint alleged that Ammu came to know that she was the coordinator only when it was announced.
The police recorded the statements of the college principal and teachers. The statement of the accused students will be recorded in the coming days. Amma’s mobile phone will be subjected to a forensic examination.
Health Minister Veena George has ordered the Kerala University of Health Sciences to conduct the study.
