Northwestern defensive end Robert Fitzgerald deletes X account after backlash on social media over Jeremiah Smith’s sprained ankle

Northwestern defensive end Robert Fitzgerald deletes X account after backlash on social media over Jeremiah Smith’s sprained ankle

During Ohio State’s eventual win against Northwestern, one play in particular infuriated Buckeye fans on social media.

During Jeremiah Smith’s 68-yard catch in the third quarter of the win, Northwestern defensive back Robert Fitzgerald grabbed Smith by the legs and appeared to use his weight to twist his ankle while defensive back Damon Walters helped tackle Smith.

Smith left the field after the game, but later returned to the contest. He finished the day with four catches for 100 receiving yards.

As expected, OSU fans were less than happy with Fitzgerald’s reception and continued to voice their displeasure with him on social media. Fitzgerald later deleted his X account after the backlash.
