Venezuela: New report by RSF and partners condemns fear, intimidation and self-censorship surrounding presidential election

Today, November 18, RSF and seven international organizations released a new report, “Restrictions on press freedom and repression of the media in the context of the elections in Venezuela.” online event where the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression, Pedro Vaca, expressed his thoughts on the matter.

The report documents various types of attacks on the Venezuelan press that took place between July 1 and August 28, in the run-up to the July 28 presidential election. It also contains interviews with about thirty journalists from national, regional and foreign media and members of Venezuelan civil society organizations.

The situation is dire, but progress is being made, and the report contains substantial recommendations for the Venezuelan government and the international community to guarantee press freedom in this politically unstable country.
