EC asks Jharkhand BJP to remove social media post that violates model code of conduct

The Election Commission (EC) has ordered the Jharkhand BJP to remove a social media post believed to be in violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and asked the party to explain the alleged violation.

Complaint by JMM and Congress

The actions of the EC took place after a complaint was filed against the decision Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and its Congress ally. The parties alleged that the BJP shared a misleading joint video on social media platforms X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook. Complainants labeled the video as harmful and misleading.

EU directive

In its ruling, the European Commission said: “After reviewing the complaint, it appears that the above social media post is prima facie in breach of the MCC.” The Commission has directed the State Electoral Officer to take immediate action as per existing laws and procedures and ensure the removal of the posts by informing the social media platforms through the authorities appointed under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act.

The electoral landscape in Jharkhand

The the first stage of voting concluded in Jharkhand November 13, the second stage is scheduled for November 20. Counting of votes and announcement of results will take place on November 23.

The BJP is hoping to make a comeback in Jharkhand, the state it lost JMM-Congress coalition five years ago, while the ruling coalition seeks to retain power.
