Police are asking the public for help in apprehending masked criminals who they say attacked a dairy owner in Lower Hutt on Sunday night.

A group of at least four masked criminals entered the dairy on Knights Road, near the city centre, shortly before 7pm.

The shop owner was attacked before the group drove off in a stolen car with cigarettes, cash and other items.

The group then allegedly abandoned the stolen car in Woburn before getting into another stolen car which was abandoned on Parliament Street before fleeing on foot.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rachel Boyd said police were concerned about the level of violence and urged anyone who witnessed anything suspicious, or who may have information or CCTV footage that could help, to call 105 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
