Councilors blame inaction in the fight against the landfill

Kochi: Councilors of the LDF in Municipality of Maradu filed a complaint with the district collector about the accumulated unsegregated waste in various departments of the local authority. They said a complaint was also sent to Local Government Minister MB Rajesh after petitions to the municipality proved ineffective.
According to First Ward Councilor Salini Anilraj, four to five truckloads of unsegregated garbage, allegedly from the filming location, were dumped in the area. Although the evidence was presented to representatives of the municipality, they did not initiate any action. “The waste was dumped on October 26 and despite several complaints, it remains at the same place,” Anilraj said.
“Despite providing the registration number of the vehicle used to dump the waste, the authorities did not react. Although municipal officials assured that the waste would be removed by November 13, this did not happen,” said municipal opposition leader CH Shanavas.
Meanwhile, municipal chairman Anthony Ashanparambil said they have imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the owner of the vehicle, Pradeep NR of Edappally, but have not been able to trace the persons who hired the vehicle from him.
“The owner of the car provided information about the people who committed the offence, and we registered a formal complaint with the Maradu police,” Ashanparambil said. He also stated that waste is currently being dumped on private land and local authorities do not have enough surplus land to relocate it.
